The Fields

Silicon Valley, California

The Fields (previously The District Milpitas) represents the rarest of opportunities; the opportunity to create a new town center and a powerful new image for a forward-looking city in Silicon Valley. This new high-density mixed-use transit-oriented development is the antithesis of the suburban shopping mall which floats in a sea of surface parking across the street from the project site. Located on 11 acres previously populated with underutilized office buildings, the new development wipes the slate clean and reorganizes the area into a series of walkable streets, passages, trails and public spaces, all defined by street-level retail and residential apartments. Comprised of four buildings containing 1,000 residential units, 80,000 square feet of retail and a 200-room Virgin hotel, the development is anchored at its center by a grand civic plaza from which the streets emanate.
Apartment buildings 2 and 4 are both five stories high, with retail at their bases and generous recreation decks on their roof-tops. Building 3 is the conceptual and physical heart of the new development. At 11-stories high, it contains 423 apartments and a 200-room hotel. An elevated pedestrian retail paseo connects the civic plaza to the light rail line on the other side of the site. The Fields will be a vibrant and modern walkable community, providing elegant density through time-honored traditions of city-making.
